Fighting Chance Consensus Rankings - Catcher

The catcher position is always the least sexy position in fantasy baseball, but that doesn't mean that it isn't important. It's always important to try to gain an edge over your opponents and if the "un-sexy" catcher spot is where you can get that edge, then damn it, you need to take advantage of it!

In the olden days it was customary to play in leagues where two catchers were a required part of the roster. However, we have evolved now and more and more leagues have switched to only one catcher leagues. Thank you baby Jesus!

If you are in a one catcher league, you should still be able to get a quality catcher at the end of drafts, so there is no need to rush to fill the position. If you are still in a two catcher league, then you may want to spend a little on the position earlier. If you wait and get two catchers that are in the 20-30 range, you could run the risk of having a catcher actually provide negative value. It's bad enough when they provide minimal value, but if they hurt your team, then you would actually be better off to not play that player. In those two catcher leagues, you don't need to grab J.T. Realmuto or Gary Sanchez if you don't want to, but I don't think I would feel good if I took two catchers outside of the top 20. Could be a recipe for disaster...

Anyways, here are the Fighting Chance Fantasy Consensus Rankings for the Catcher position. Here is who contributed to the rankings are where you can find them on Twitter. There are some notes after and each participants rankings are listed at the bottom for reference.

Notes

  • J.T. Realmuto was first on three of our experts rankings and Gary Sanchez was first on two. I think you need to give Hallam and Polka Pat a little hell for picking Sanchez.
  • There were seven catchers who were consensus Top Ten picks among all of us. Those catchers were Realmuto, Sanchez, Wilson Ramos, Yasmani Grandal, Willson Contreras, Yadier Molina, and Buster Posey.
  • The catcher that was most enigmatic at the position was Welington Castillo. He was in the top eight of two experts (Rapin and Kari Thomas), ranked number ten, number 14 and ranked all the way down at 21 for Polka.
  • San Diego (Francisco Mejia and Austin Hedges), Washington (Yan Gomes and Kurt Suzuki) and Minnesota (Willians Astudillo and Mitch Garver) all had two catchers from each team make our top 25 consensus rankings.
